Donald Beasley Institute Research – Disabled Persons-Led Monitoring of UNCRPD “My Experience, My Rights: Supports and Services”

My name is Umi Asaka. I am a Junior Research Fellow at the Donald Beasley Institute (DBI).

DBI is a national independent disability research institute in Ōtepoti – Dunedin. 

As a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the New Zealand government is obligated to commission disabled people to monitor how well they are implementing the convention in the country. As part of this, our team of disabled researchers at the DBI is conducting a research project called Disabled Persons-Led Monitoring of UNCRPD “My Experience, My Rights: Supports and Services”.

Currently, the disability sector in Aotearoa New Zealand is undergoing critical change. It is important to capture disabled people’s voices throughout this transitioning stage.

This project aims to capture the experiences of any support and services related to disability in the past 5 years, and identify the areas where improvements are needed.

We would like to talk to family, whānau, aiga and close supporters of people with complex disabilities.
